With the cruise industry in Southampton expected to see even more foot traffic in the coming years as newer ships start to visit, the hotel scene has had to adapt quickly to accommodate this growth. And so, your latest Southampton stay begins here, with VOCO Southampton.
The perfect blend of comfort, style and convenience, set right in the heart of the city. VOCO Southampton offers beautifully designed rooms with plush bedding, modern amenities, and stunning views - ideal for a relaxing getaway before or after your cruise, especially as you can watch your ship sail in.
VOCO Southampton's rebrand has been overseen by Valor Hospitality, which has managed an extensive refurbishment programme for the hotel's 133 en-suite bedrooms to reflect the laid-back charm of IHG's VOCO brand. Designed to create a premium and personalised experience, the hotel now boasts a brand new restaurant, Atlantic Gate, as well as a gym and conference facilities.
Situated next to the city's historic Dock Gate 8 Cruise Terminal, the hotel seamlessly blends the opulence of cruise liners with the adventure of the open sea. Atlantic Gate will offer fresh seafood and crafted cocktails, incorporating locally-inspired maritime design, allowing it to sit perfectly within its maritime theme.
As part of the refurbishment, Northampton-based ABDA Design has revamped the bedrooms to reflect VOCO'S distinctive aesthetic, with refreshed colour schemes, finishes and lighting inspired by the sea and Southampton's identity as the 'Gateway to the World'.
Having stayed at VOCO Southampton several times in the last year, it felt right to finally share more thoughts on the hotel and why I love it so much. It's somewhere I've recommended time and time again to friends and those travelling to the city. Comfortable and convenient, VOCO has a collection of stylishly renovated guest rooms and suites, ranging from standard rooms with options like queen or twin beds to premium rooms with larger beds and city or harbour views.
Each of the rooms features en-suite bathrooms, free Wi-Fi, air conditioning, tea and coffee-making facilities, workspaces, and smart entertainment systems for a relaxing stay. Guests can also expect thoughtful in-room amenities such as complimentary bottled water, bathrobes and slippers on request, plus handy extras like irons and desks.
The beds are incredibly comfortable, and each room includes a pillow menu so you can pick what suits you best whilst you're staying at the hotel. Rooms are typically stocked with both feather and non-feather pillows, giving you a choice between a softer, plush feel and a firmer, more supportive option.
One of the highlights at the hotel is their restaurant, Atlantic Gate - a vibrant seafood and cocktail spot where the drinks take centre stage thanks to its stunning, central bar. The menu focuses on fresh seafood, succulent steaks and a range of delicious small plates full of bold, fun flavours. From seared scallops and whole lemon sole to a seafood thermidor and seasonal mains, you'd be hardpushed not to find something you would enjoy. If you want to stick to the classics, the burger and chips option is one of the best in the city.
Inside, the interior blends casual elegance with a lively atmosphere - think a modern open kitchen that fills the space with enticing aromas, refined décor, and comfortable seating that works just as well for a relaxed lunch or a special occasion dinner. You'll also find a cosy terrace tucked away, perfect for soaking up the last of the setting sun or a post-dinner cocktail.
The service at Atlantic Gate is always an enjoyable experience; the staff are attentive, friendly and efficient, creating such a warm and welcoming atmosphere. At the heart of the experience is the bar and cocktail menu, expertly crafted with a selection of speciality cocktails, premium spirits, wine and local beers.
Mermaid, the award-winning gin from the Isle of Wight, is also served at Atlantic Gate, bringing with it a refreshing taste of the coast to your cocktail experience. My personal favourites are the Espresso Martini made with Mermaid Salt Vodka and a Classic Margarita.
I have visited Atlantic Gate as a hotel guest and as a standalone customer and have found that I am always delivered a memorable blend of quality food, well-curated drinks, and warm service. It's such a great spot and a hugely welcome addition to Southampton.
Overall, VOCO Southampton is a fantastic choice if you're looking for a stylish, comfortable stay in the city. With thoughtfully designed rooms, a welcoming atmosphere, great food and drink options, and its close proximity to the cruise terminals and city centre, it ticks all the right boxes.
Whether you're visiting for a short break, a pre-cruise stay, or a special occasion, VOCO Southampton offers a relaxed yet polished experience that I would recommend time and time again.
